Summer in Megève — Hiking, Wellness & Alpine Calm

Most travellers discover Megève in winter. Many of them return in summer — and quietly admit, after a few days, that they prefer it. Le Refuge des Anges in summer is a different proposition: longer days, the panoramic terrace coming into its own, the meadows of the Aravis range exploding into wildflowers, and the Megève village square slowing down to its true rhythm. This is the season the French keep for themselves.

Hiking — 250 Kilometres of Marked Trails

Megève sits at the meeting point of three massifs — the Aravis, the Mont-Joly chain, and the Mont d'Arbois. The town manages 250 km of marked hiking trails, ranging from gentle valley walks to serious alpine routes. From Le Refuge des Anges, the most beloved local routes are within a five-minute drive:

  • Le Calvaire — a one-hour climb above the village, with panoramic views and the historic chapels of the Stations of the Cross. Suitable for families.
  • Mont-Joly — the classic local summit (2 525 m), reachable in a half-day from the Mont d'Arbois plateau, with a 360° view from Mont Blanc to the Aravis.
  • Mont d'Arbois plateau — accessible by cable car (open in summer), with gentle plateau walks suited to all ages.
  • Lac de Javen — a dramatic alpine lake circuit, cooler in late summer.

Local guides (the Bureau des Guides de Megève) can be arranged through the hosts of Le Refuge des Anges for half-day or full-day excursions, including via ferrata and trail running.

Mountain Biking & E-Bike

The Évasion Mont-Blanc lifts that serve the ski domain in winter run for mountain bikers in summer. Megève has invested heavily in its VTT and e-bike infrastructure — flow trails for beginners, technical descents for experts, and a network of e-bike circuits that connect Megève to Combloux, Praz-sur-Arly and Saint-Gervais. Bike rentals are available in the village; the hosts of Le Refuge des Anges can recommend operators that deliver to the residence.

Golf at Mont d'Arbois

The Golf du Mont d'Arbois — designed by Henry Cotton in the 1960s for the Rothschild family — is one of the most spectacular 18-hole courses in Europe. The course sits at 1 300 metres of altitude, with the Mont Blanc as the backdrop on the third tee. Le Refuge des Anges guests enjoy preferential green-fee booking through the hosts; we will reach out on your behalf.

Wellness — The Sauna Comes Into Its Own

The private sauna at Le Refuge des Anges, on the same landing as the apartment, is wonderful in winter. In summer, after a long hiking day, it is something else entirely — the slow heat unlocking the muscles, followed by a cool shower, followed by the long terrace evening watching the alpenglow. Pair with the spa treatments at the Cinq Mondes spa at Les Fermes de Marie or the Pure Altitude spa for a full wellness day.

The Megève Music Festival

Each July and August, Megève hosts the Megève Jazz Contest and the international classical music festival — open-air concerts on the Place du Village, intimate church recitals, and headline performances at the Palais des Sports. The cultural programme is one of the densest of any French alpine resort. Programme dates are published each May; Le Refuge des Anges guests are kept informed during the booking process.

The Long Lunches

Megève's restaurants, including the three Michelin-starred ones, are open in summer with terraces that change the experience entirely. The mountain-top tables — L'Idéal 1850 at Mont d'Arbois, Côte 2000 on Rochebrune — are at their best between June and September. See our complete restaurant guide for the full short-list.

The Terrace at Le Refuge des Anges

For all the activity Megève offers, the most consistent praise from summer guests at Le Refuge des Anges is for the apartment's own 20 m² panoramic terrace. The Praz-sur-Arly massifs in the foreground, the Aravis range beyond. Mornings begin with coffee and silence. Evenings end with dinner outdoors and the long alpine sunset. For travellers in search of the rare luxury of doing nothing, the terrace is, in many cases, the entire point.

When to Come

The Megève summer season runs from mid-June to mid-September. July and August are warmest, busiest, and offer the full cultural programme. June and September are quieter, cooler in the evenings, with wildflowers (June) or the early autumn light (September) at their best. Le Refuge des Anges is open through the summer; the hosts can advise on the best window for your specific interests.
